My Journey
My name is Ashwaq Albaraky. I am from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I am a PhD student and a mother of four children. At the beginning of my first year, I found out that I was pregnant. I started to think – what should I do? Should I withdraw from my course? Or should I meet this big challenge and firmly face all the difficulties that it will bring.

I decided to face these firmly. During my 9 month pregnancy, I kept coming to university every day. No break. No holiday. I had to finish my continuation report and pass my first year viva; in addition to taking care of my family and adapting to a new culture and life. No-one could imagine my feelings at the time.
I was frustrated, bored and anxious. Everything was on top of me. My head felt so heavy. There was too much pressure on me.
I went to the Doctoral Academy and spoke to my PGR Support Administrator. She supported and encouraged me. Her words will remain with me forever. In spite of all of these things, I am glad that I had a safe birth, a beautiful little scientific boy named Sattam – which means the brave and strong.
I am writing this to tell you that I am glad that I passed the hardest year in my life and to encourage you that you can achieve the same.
Please believe in yourself and challenge yourself; you will achieve your goals. We are strong women and can do this.
I am happy to be the first student representative for pregnant women.
Please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best wishes Ashwaq Albaraky
