Terry’s Chocolate Orange hot chocolate
Terry’s have been making them for almost 90 years but did you know their original product was actually a chocolate apple? Only a few years later (in 1932) did they come up with the chocolate orange, which is composed of the iconic segments loved by many today, with 44 million Terry’s Chocolate Oranges being sold across 7 countries every year. They even flirted with a chocolate lemon at one point but that was a short-lived affair (thankfully). Luckily, its citrus cousin made for a better bedfellow. Who knew chocolate and orange was such a good flavour combination? Enjoy it in its sumptuous melted form by whipping up your own Costa-style Terry’s Chocolate Orange hot chocolate.
Ingredients (serves 4)
- 1 1/2 tbsp cornflour
- 900 ml (1 ½ pint) whole or semi-skimmed milk
- 125 g (4oz) Terry’s chocolate orange, broken into piece (plus extra to serve if desired)
- 50 g (2oz) dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 orange
- Squirty cream (to serve)
- Mini marshmallows (to serve)
Method (Total time: ~10 minutes)
- Whisk the cornflour together with a little milk in a small bowl to make a paste, then tip into a saucepan with the remaining milk and both chocolates.
- Use a peeler to take a few strips of skin off from the orange, and add to the pan. Slowly heat the mixture, whisking occasionally, until the chocolates have melted and mixture has thickened slightly.
- Divide among four mugs (discard orange peel). Top with squirty cream, mini marshmallows, a sprinkle of remaining orange zest and a slice of Terry’s chocolate orange, if you like.

N.B For extra citrus flavour, cut the orange into small segments and add those into the saucepan too. This way, you also make use of the whole orange! (Also, if you don’t like it too sweet, leave out the dark chocolate and just use Terry’s chocolate orange segments instead – it’ll still be sweet enough).
